Hamilton continues stellar defensive effort in win over Wayland- High school sports rewind

Hamilton honored its four graduating seniors with another shutout victory on Wednesday night, with this one coming against Wayland in a 1-0 win. The Hawkeye defense and Bailey Gauthier in net remained strong and allowed few chances. The group has allowed just one goal on the season. Lily Klanderman scored the lone goal of the game off a corner kick rebound in the first half. Hamilton is now 8-1-2 on the season.

“Hamilton Girls Soccer is forever indebted to our four seniors—Malia Ruiter, Bailey Gauthier, Rowan Schut, and Reagan Schut,” said hamilton coach Tyler Robinson. “Their contributions on and off the field over the years have been nothing short of impeccable, and they will leave Hamilton Soccer better than it was four years ago due to their positive influence.”

GIRLS SOCCER

Zeeland West 1, Unity Christian 1

The Dux played their last regular-season home game in front of a packed house Wednesday night, earning a 1-1 draw against perennial state powerhouse Unity Christian. The Dux struck first in the opening 15 minutes of the game when Anna Miller got in behind the Crusader backline. After cutting the ball back, she found Bella Cifuentes wide open on top of the penalty box. Bella’s one-time shot was headed towards goal and a mass of bodies in front of the net when Brooklyn Geerlings deflected it, catching the keeper going the wrong way. Unity Christian scored with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the break.

In the second half, both teams generated several quality scoring chances but were unable to find the back of the net. Both teams battled throughout the second half to maintain possession through the midfield, and both defenses played solid and intelligent soccer.

“What a great night and atmosphere for soccer – great crowd, great kids, two quality teams getting after it for 80 minutes… Unity has set the standard of excellence for years, and has a strong tradition of success,” said West coach Ben Hondorp. “For 80 minutes tonight, our kids went toe to toe with a really good team and were able to compete and execute at a really high level playing our brand of soccer. Our defense did an excellent job of absorbing pressure and playing out of the back, limiting a potent offense to very few quality looks at goal. Our midfield played with poise and composure and matched their physicality and aggressiveness. In the attacking third, we generated five or six quality chances in the second half which could have pushed us over the top. Despite that, we were able to sustain our energy, enthusiasm and execution in all phases of our game plan tonight. Really proud of the consistency, resiliency and composure with which we continue to play.”

The Dux are 8-1-2 on the season and look to play East Grand Rapids on Monday before starting conference tournament play on Tuesday when they host Muskegon.

Zeeland East 2, Forrest Hills Central 2

Zeeland East tied Forest Hills Central 2-2 Wednesday night in a non-confernce game.

Saugatuck 7, Watervliet 0

Saugatuck defeated Watervliet 7-0 this evening in girls soccer. Erin Moerler paced the offense with three goals, with Iris Kuipers scoring twice and Kennedy Gustafson and Jenn Schock adding one apiece. Kuipers and Eva Kierzek each recorded two assists on the evening with Maddie Klein, Ainsley Lowery, and Schock assisting once. Grace Greenwood recorded the shutout in net.

Saugatuck improves to 9-3-3 on the season.

Fennville 4, Delton Kellogg 0

Fennville soccer beat Delton Kellogg by a score of 4-0. Angelica Mendoza led the way with two goals and an assist. Ellie Merson and Taylor Correa each added a goal as well. Bailey Zuroske recorded the shutout in goal for the Blackhawks.

BASEBALL

Calvin Christian 14, Hamilton 5

Thano Klett had two singles and Austin Osborne had a double and a single in the loss.

Zeeland East 11, Union 1

Zeeland East finished the three-game sweep of Grand Rapids Union on Wednesday after being postponed due to weather last week. Zeeland East jumped on top early scoring 5 runs in the top of the first inning and then adding three more in both the second and third inning to win 11-1.

Jake Meyering started on the mound for Zeeland East and records the win, going two innings, striking out four and allowing no hits. Connor Tietema was solid in relief, throwing three innings and allowing only one hit while striking out two batters.

Offensively, the Chix were led by Charlie Lacny (two hits, a double, three RBI, two runs scored) and Max Cochran (two hits). Brenston Brown also added a double.

Zeeland East improves their record to 15-7 on the season and 9-5 in the OK Green. They travel to Wyoming to finish up a three-game series on Thursday.

TENNIS

West Ottawa 9, Grand Blanc 0

The Panthers dominated and swept Grand Blanc on Wednesday. Megan Blake earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Danielle Lebster came away with a 6-1,6-1 win at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 doubles, Chloe Duckworth earned a 6-1,6-1 win as well. Grace Gaul wrapped up the singles points with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 comeback win.

In the doubles points, Kaitlyn Meyer and Madelyn Moored won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Kelly Linart and Kamryn Dumas won 6-1,6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Hallee Pratt and Eleanor Ervine won in a perfect 6-0,6-0 sweep at No .3 doubles. The No. 4 doubles point was won by Rachel Kennedy and Jessica Zhang by a score of 6-3, 6-0. The final point of the match was won 6-1,6-1 by Eden Hamilton and Kayla Jones.

Holland Christian 8, Zeeland West 0

The Maroons swept the Dux on Wednesday afternoon. Hope Rhoades earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Bria Lampen came away with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Eva VanKlompenberg won the No. 3 singles point 6-0,6-3. Jenna Grotenhuis won the no. 4 singles point by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

In the doubles points, Lilly DeVries and Ainsley VandenBrink won 7-5, 6-2 for the No. 1 doubles match. Kayla VandenBerr and Monika Diaz earned a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Larissa Bol and Esmay Klingenberg won the No. 3 doubles point 6-0, 6-1. To wrap up the evening Abi Kraal and Nicole Genzink won 6-0, 6-1.

BOYS GOLF

West Ottawa finishes 6th at Jenison Jamboree

West Ottawa traveled to The Meadows of GVSU to compete in the Jenison Jamboree, shot a season-low team score of 171, and finished in sixth place, just two shots out of third. Senior Gavin Hardy led the Panthers with a 40, junior Jackson Wiegerink shot 42, freshman Hugh Ervine, shooting a season-low 44, counted into the scoring, as did junior Nash Bosma [45] and sophomore Will Niziolek [45].

Hamilton finishes third at OK Blue Jamboree

The Hamilton Hawkeyes shot a team score of 167 good for third place on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes were led by Riley Johr and Eli Timmerman who both shot 39 for top-10 finishes. Ben Boehm shot a 44 and Jacob Lange shot a 45.
