After Black jockeys were emancipated pursuing the Civil War, even so, white jockeys went out of their way to force them out of the sport thanks to the good results and earnings of Black riders. African-American jockeys ended up attacked by their white counterparts though competing and ended up ultimately denied licenses to experience.
Whilst the racial discrimination in the activity was not explicitly acknowledged in this year’s Preakness Stakes, it offered a historic backdrop that was hard to ignore.
